You may have never liked engineering in the first place.

Maybe you joined engineering because of parent pressure.Maybe all your friends were preparing for JEE, so you followed them.Or maybe you genuinely believed you would become a great engineer—but later realised this is not for you.

Whatever the reason, today you feel stuck. You now realise that coding is not your strength.Maybe engineering itself doesn’t excite you at all.

Stop Thinking About the Past

There is no point in thinking:

  • “Why did I take engineering?”
  • “My parents spent so much money.”
  • “My career is lost.”
  • “Everything has gone wrong.”

Do not think about why things went wrong.

Instead, ask only one question:

“What should I do NOW?” Nothing has been lost. Trust me.

🎓 First Important Advice: Complete Your Engineering For Sure. Very Very Very Important.

If you are already in 2nd or 3rd year of engineering, first thing is please do not drop out now. Dropping out may feel like relief, but in most cases it is not a good option. Work hard. Struggle if needed. Somehow complete your engineering degree and get that certificate.

I I have worked closely with colleges and the technology industry for most of my career…20 years. A degree still matters in India and an Engineering degree is a big thing.

Please complete it.

The other thing I tell is unless you are really really smart, which atleast I wasn’t , don’t start doing 2 things at the same time..like say starting to prepare for MBA or other competitive exams while you are in the second or third year. Everything has a time. Now ,is the time to concentrate on engineering. Probably sometime in 4th year, you can look at doing these and that too only if you want to. Else wait till you complete your engineering.

A better option is for you to take in some certificates like ITIL,Six Sigma,DevOPs etc.So when you sit for interviews you can impress the interviewer. Since coding is your weak point, you may not be able to sit in many interviews. But wherever you are allowed to,you should be able to make an impression.

Then Come the Options (There Are Many)

Now let’s talk about what you can do next.

📘 Option 1: PhD (India-Focused Advice)

Most people talk about MS in the US.That is fine—if your parents have a lot of money.

But the reality is, most Indian families do not, including mine.A very good option is PhD in India. In your final year of engineering, you can start preparing for NET, the entrance exam for PhD.You may not clear it in the first attempt. That is okay. Many people clear it in the second attempt.

While doing Ph.d colleges give stipend as well..like ₹15000 – 35000.

After a PhD:

  • You can become an Assistant Professor in good colleges
  • You can earn decent and stable money esp.becuase you also have a engineering degree.Over time, salary increases
  • Stress is much lower compared to software jobs

Software jobs are very stressful. You never know when you may be asked to resign.

📗 Option 2: MBA

Another strong option is MBA.

You can prepare for CAT. Many colleges accept CAT scores. If you want you may drop a year after engineering to prepare only for entrance. Actually you can do a part time job and then prepare for the entrance.

You can also try entrance exams of colleges like Symbiosis and others.

MBA opens doors to many corporate roles—without coding. And the pay is good as well.

📙 Option 3: ERP Careers (Like SAP)

After Engineering, you can learn ERP systems like SAP and become a technical consultant.ABAP is the language used here. There is a bit of coding involved but nothing that you cannot cope with. Else you can do a post-graduation like MBA and become a Functional consultant. No coding is required here.

You can work in companies like SAP,IBMTCS,Wipro and many more

These roles are well-paid.I say this confidently because I come from this background.

🎨 Option 4: Create Your Own Path

And yes—there are careers outside traditional jobs too.

You can become a YouTuber. But please remember:

  • Do not copy what every other vlogger is doing
  • Find something unique to you
  • Otherwise, you won’t get views

If you love photography:

  • You can become a wildlife photographer
  • A food photographer
  • Or a niche content creator

Remember R. Madhavan in the movie 3 Idiots? He studied engineering, hated it, loved wildlife photography, became a photographer—and succeeded.

🎨 Option 5: Create a Business

You don’t have to become an employee only. You can also become a businessman / woman. But please remember—don’t do what everyone else is doing.
If you copy common ideas, competition will be very high and growth will be difficult.I did it.i started selling Jaipur handicrafts on amazon. The venture closed even before it started. The reason : there were so many experienced people already doing since years that I did not stand a chance. So Look for something different. Something unique to you.

You have it in you to do it.There is a saying—"if you have a why, you will always find a how.”

❤️ Final Message

“These are few of  the options that I know. There are many more options not listed here.
So please don’t worry. We have only one life, at least that is what I have seen.Let’s not stress too much.Let’s enjoy life. Too much stress only leads to health problems, even heart attacks.
Your career will settle—but your health must stay with you.”

Everyone has different skills. If coding is not your skill, that is perfectly okay.

So don’t worry.Your life is not over because you don’t like coding. Your career is not finished because you skipped placements.
